Eclipse Star: Chapter 37

“Rise of the Hex-Duo”

Recap:  After months in development, Charles announced to Syrus that the Hex-Duo robots were finally ready to send into battle.  Once Syrus saw Hex-Duo 6 in action, he instantly decided to make a full attack that very day.  Now ten murderous robots make their way to the Legion’s base with the intent of killing the twelve teenagers stationed there, as well as anyone who gets in their way.  A vicious day begins today in Eclipse Star!

-The group of teenagers is outside on the Legion’s training grounds hard at work sparring with one another.  Derek and Jack are squared off in the middle of everything with their sparring match exceeding normal conventions.

-Jack slams Derek in the side of the head with a haymaker.

Jack:  Derek, you’re faster than that!

-Derek vwings from the ground into a rising knee that Jack barely manages to dodge.

-Derek fires a few blasts in Jack’s direction, which Jack flips out of the way of.

-Upon Jack landing, Derek slams him in the back of the head from behind, then elbows him into the ground, where he then punches downward, only to get a kick in the jaw that causes him to stumble back.

-Jack gets up and hurls himself at Derek, pushing Derek off his feet.

-Of course, Derek can still fly, and responds by spinning viciously in the air, a punch coming out of the blur and striking Jack harshly in the face.

Derek:  That fast enough for ya?

-Jack hits the ground and springs back up, firing a blast into Derek’s side, sending Derek off into the sky.

Jack:  (Looks up, smiling).  Nope, still not there!

-Up in the sky, Derek regains control of Jack’s blast and crushes it between his hands, then floats in the air a moment.

Derek:  Oh Jack, you just can’t grasp real speed.

He rockets off towards Jack, ready to punch.

-He hits Jack, but Jack hits him as well, so they both go flying and once they get up they’re both breathing really hard.

Derek:  Not bad Jackie boy.

Jack:  Not bad yourself.

They launch back at each other.

-Not far off…

Hex-Duo 6:  Four of us will attack the hospital wing instantly.  The four will be numbers 1, 3, 4, and 10.  The rest will accompany me to the training grounds.  Understood?

Hex-Duo 1:  (Gives Hex-Duo 6 a thumbs-up).  I get ya loud and clear 6.

Hex-Duo 4:  (Pounding his fists together).  Excellent!  I get an extra kill afterall!

Hex-Duo 6:  Remember, excessive force.  Do not hold back on this kid just because he’s sick.  Syrus showed too much pity on these worthless creatures; we’re not doing the same.

Hex-Duo 2:  So the rest of us are on crowd control until the main one’s dead?

Hex-Duo 6:  Precisely.

Hex-Duo 7:  Should we sneak into the complex while they’re distracted with the alarms?

Hex-Duo 6:  No, we’re making our presence known as vividly as possible.

Hex-Duo 7:  But Syrus said to, (Grabs his mouth).  Oop…

Hex-Duo 6:  (Looks visually pissed).  What did I tell you about Syrus?

Hex-Duo 3:  He said not to listen to him!  (Rushes in front of Hex-Duo 7 and points a finger in his face).  Why are you listening to him 7?  Are you trying to split us up?  Are you purposefully trying to make us fail?  Huh?!

Hex-Duo 6:  Enough.  7, just stay out of our way for this.  I’m taking your kill from you since you seem to be defective at the moment.  (Turns to the others).  And no, none of you can have it.  (Turns back towards the base).  Now let’s just get this over with.

Hex-Duo 8:  (They begin flying once more).  Hey guys, wouldn’t it be awesome if we could all transform into one, like, giant robot?

Hex-Duo 6:  What are you talking about?

Hex-Duo 8:  I mean, I could be the head and 5 could be the body and you all could be arms and legs and we’d be huge and super powerful.  Wouldn’t that be awesome?

All the other Hex-Duo robots look at 8 like he just said the stupidest thing ever.

Hex-Duo 6:  That has to be the dumbest concept I’ve ever heard.  If anyone speaks about transforming into a giant robot I’ll destroy them.

-Elsewhere in the hospital wing nearby…

Chris:  (Chris has just received the news from Lindsey that she has a crush on Jack.  Lindsey’s also still sitting at the end of his bed).  But…why?

Lindsey:  I can’t really explain why I like him, he’s just…

Chris:  He’s a jerk.

Lindsey:  Yeah well, girls kinda like that in a guy.  (Chris is mind numbingly devastated).  Remember, don’t tell anyone.  (Chris nods).  See, you’re such a nice guy.

The alarms start going off.  Lindsey stands up, alerted.

Lindsey:  What’s that?

Chris:  (Stunned and hardly audible).  I’m a nice guy…

Lindsey:  I’m gonna go see what’s up outside.

Chris:  I’m…

Lindsey:  They probably need me outside.  (Starts to get up and rush out the door).

Chris:  But…I need you…

Lindsey:  (Hardly listening to Chris).  What?  I can’t chat right now.  You’ll be fine, just get some more rest.  (Leaves).

Chris:  Don’t leave…

-Chris is heartbroken.  He is sitting limply on the bed, head down, a small tear rolling down his cheek.

-Still, he gets up and starts putting his shoes on for some reason.

Chris:  Maybe she’ll still need me…  (Puts on his shoes and about gets up but stops and sits back down).  No.  She has Jack…

Scene leaves Chris slumped over sitting at the end of his bed, head buried in his hands.

-Jack and Derek are still fighting back and forth on the training grounds while everyone else spars around them.

-Everyone is definitely feeling the effects of a solid workout.

-And now the alarm goes off.

-Jack stops and looks around, serious.

Jack:  Guys, we’ve got something going on.

Derek:  (Gets out of his fighting stance).  Obviously, but what is it?

Lindsey:  (Comes running out from the building).  Jack, is everything alright?

Jack:  I’m not sure.  I don’t know what the alarm’s from.  Eh…(Something catches his attention as he looks into the air).

Hex-Duo 6:  (Floating above their heads with a smirk on his face.  He has his posse of robots at his sides).  Good evening to you all.

Derek:  Who or what is that?

Jack:  I don’t know.  (Slightly putting his guard up).  What do you all want?

Hex-Duo 6:  So formal, aren’t they?  (His group laughs).  Well let’s get these formalities out of the way.  I am Hex-Duo number 6, and these are my fellow Hex-Duo brothers.

The Hex-Duo robots all smile and respond accordingly.

Derek:  (Sneers).  Robots.

Jack:  What are robots doing here?

Hex-Duo 6:  We’re more than just mere robots.  We are the Hex-Duo model of robot.  We are the most feared machines known to mankind.

Derek:  Then why haven’t we ever heard of you?

Hex-Duo 6:  Because we haven’t introduced ourselves to the world.  That changes tonight.

Austin:  (Runs over to Jack and Derek’s position with the rest of the group).  Jack, the alarms…!  (Sees the hovering robots).  The hell…?

Kyle:  Well shit, androids.  (Sees Number 9).  And the Tin Man?

Hex-Duo 9:  (Gets pissed, almost throwing a tantrum).  I’m not made of tin!  I am built with reinforced steel and alloys!

Hex-Duo 6:  It brings me great pleasure to inform you that we were created with the basic purpose of ending your lives.

Derek:  Pff, scary.

Hex-Duo 6:  (Points towards the hospital wing).  Bring him down.

-Hex-Duo 1, 3, 4 and 10 all take off and hover above the hospital wing.

Jack:  What in the…?

Austin:  (Realizes what’s about to happen).  NOOOOO!!!

Hex-Duo 6:  Hmh.  (Looks up and nods).

Hex-Duo 4:  Hoorah!

All four of the robots’ arms break away to reveal some serious firepower behind them as all four begin glowing with an unnatural light.

Lindsey:  (Now everyone has pieced it together).  Oh no…  (She’s near speechless).

Hex-Duo 6:  (Yells up at the four).  Unload!

-Absolute chaos ensues at this point.

-The four robots hanging over the building all unleash with wave after wave of energy blasts, each lighting up the evening sky beyond belief.

-At the same time, the group has begun to panic, with a few members such as Leena attempting to make a break for it and others, such as Austin, trying to get to the hospital wing.

-As people start to move, Hex-Duo 6 brutalizes Austin’s stomach with a punch that probably nearly kills him, laying him out.

-Derek is still too blown away to move yet, looking from one thing to another.

-Finally he looks up at the hospital wing and blasts off, zipping out of the way of the Hex-Duos standing in the immediate area.

Derek:  You picked the wrong time to screw with us!  We’ve never been stronger!

Coming at Hex-Duo 4 extremely fast, for some reason deciding to take on the biggest threat first, just like the noble fool that Derek is.

Hex-Duo 4:  Hah, funny.

-Hex-Duo 4 turns towards Derek and fires a blast at him.

-Derek moves out of the way, but the blast levels another building.

-Derek shoots up past him and punches Hex-Duo 4 dead in the face.

-The robot responds by hardly moving.

Hex-Duo 4:  Hahaha, you’re a bit tired, aren’t you?

The other robots stop attacking the building and look over at Derek.

-The top few levels of the building are thoroughly mangled and on fire, yet the main portion of the building is standing, a massive surprise.

Derek:  (Now extremely unsure of what to do).  Dammit…

-Hex-Duo 4 looks at Derek, his eyes going crazy as he moves at incredible speed.

Hex-Duo 4:  Thugged!

Double-hand smashes Derek back to the crowd of people, who have all become too stunned to move.

-Derek bounces as he hits the ground, damaged but somehow conscious.

Hex-Duo 6:  Strong building, isn’t it?

-Hex-Duo 6 turns to it and throws a wicked blast its way, mauling the side of the building.

-Finally, we can see someone leap out of the top of the building and take a swing at one of the robots.

Hex-Duo 6:  There he is…

Jack:  It’s Chris!

-Jack sees the smaller Hex-Duo and jumps at him, grabbing him from behind.

Jack:  Leave him alone or I’ll destroy your frog-like friend here!

Hex-Duo 2:  (Laughs uproariously).  Ahahaha, wrong!

-Hex-Duo 2 breaks Jack’s grip as if it were nothing and elbows him in the face, sending him back to the ground where all he can do is hold his face.

-From up in the air, all that the group can see is a swath of robots beating Chris senseless, slapping him between them, blood showering from every punch.

-They end it by throwing him back onto the top of the flaming building, then unloading to an intensity triple that of what they’ve already shown, the sky on fire as well from the light.

Commander:  God damn it!

The Commander flies out from nowhere and bashes Hex-Duo 6 in the face, sending him spinning backwards.

Commander:  (Turns to the group of teenagers).  All of you, get the f*ck out of here!

Jack:  (In an utmost rage).  We can take them right here if we band together!

Commander:  No, you can’t!

Hex-Duo 6 rights himself in the air and zooms back, firing a vicious punch at the Commander’s head, narrowly missing.

Lindsey:  CHRIS!!!!  (Going crazy from crying, she’s trying to break free from Kyle’s hold on her).

Hex-Duo 6:  Finish the bastard off already!

The rest of the group all hover above Chris’ position and begin firing as well, once more tripling the power.

Commander:  Oh God!

-He punches Hex-Duo 6 in the head, knocking the robot back only so slightly, but the Commander instantly grabs his hand, recoiling from the punch.

Hex-Duo 6:  I’m sorry, did that break your hand?

Commander:  (The utmost fear and pleading is in his face and voice as he speaks).  Leave them alone, I beg of you!

Hex-Duo 6:  (Absolutely cold).  No.

-All the other buildings around the area are evacuating with soldiers running as fast as they can to get away.

-Austin is still on the ground, trying to breath again.

-Derek is stumbling to regain his balance, falling over every time he gets up.

-Lindsey is being held by Kyle and the rest are all held firmly by fear, with the blatant emotion showing in their eyes like a mirror.

-Finally, the only sounds that can be heard are a screeching blasting noise as the hospital wing is entirely demolished, and an ear-piercing cry from Chris as he’s torn to shreds under the force of this attack.

-The robots stop momentarily and then fire one finishing blast in unison that up heaves the entire area.

-At this point Chris’s yell has stopped.

-There is complete silence.

-Everyone stops moving or talking and waits for the smoke to clear.

-Once it does, it’s clear that there is nothing left where the building stood.

Hex-Duo 6:  (Smiles).  Wonderful.  Number 2, is he?

Hex-Duo 2:  (Tapping his head and laughing).  He’s more than dead 6.  (Catches something else from nearby as a “blip-blip” sound is heard).  Wait a second…  (Looks over at Lindsey).

-Lindsey flips out and breaks free from Kyle.

Lindsey:  (Looking directly at Hex-Duo 6).  I’LL KILL YOU!!!!

-Lindsey runs at Hex-Duo 6, leaping at his face.

-The Commander can’t respond in time, hardly turning around to see what’s happening.

-However, Hex-Duo 6 is responding in real-time despite the fact that this is all happening in slow motion.

-Right as Lindsey is about to get her face wiped off from a serious punch, Jack leaps in the way, grabbing Lindsey and positioning himself between her and the robot.

-He takes the punch in the back, not even getting a chance to yell, but is instead almost K.O.ed instantly.

-Both he and Lindsey are thrown a severe distance.

Commander:  (Can hardly keep up with the action).  Jack!

Turns back to catch a punch from Hex-Duo 6.  He’s in utter badass mode right now.

Commander:  I’ll take you to Hell myself if I have to.

Hex-Duo 6:  You’re not going to get that chance.

Hex-Duo 5 and 9 come out from the sides and smash the Commander between them.

-Hex-Duo 6 just crosses his arms and lands calmly, enjoying the scene

– As this is all going on, the various robots above the crater are taking potshots at the groups of soldiers fleeing the area and the buildings around the complex.

Lindsey:  (Shaking Jack, trying to restore him).  Jack…!  Please no…!

Jack:  (He’s alive but not well.  He looks up weakly, grabs Lindsey, and moves her out of the way).  Get out of here.  Everyone needs to get out of here.

Derek:  (Still stumbling around, taking swings at whatever he thinks is moving).  Come here dammit!  Stop running!

Kyle:  (Hoisting Austin onto his back).  We’re leaving.  I don’t even have a quip for the situation; we’re just leaving now.

Commander:  (Questioning the Hex-Duo).  Who made you?  Was it Octavious?!

Hex-Duo 6:  No, he just sent us.

-Hex-Duo 6 looks off at a group of soldiers making a break for it a good distance away.

-It fires a blast at this group, killing the lot of them.

Hex-Duo 6:  He sends his regards.

Commander:  (Goes ballistic at this point, his power jumping by an amazing degree).  It doesn’t surprise me that he’s too cowardly to come deal with us himself.

Hex-Duo 5 and 9 punch at the Commander from either side, yet he blocks both, grabs 9 by the wrist and spins him into 5, then hurls 9 into the air where he catches 1 off guard and hits him in the back.

-5 gets up unrealistically fast for a thing his size and about kills the Commander with another punch, but gets booted in the head and knocked slightly off balance, then grabbed and thrown into the air with the rest.

Hex-Duo 6:  (Just watching this all happen and not caring).  Something sure has gotten into you, hasn’t it?

The Commander jumps at Hex-Duo 6.

-6 grabs him, rolls back, and kicks the Commander in the chest and into the airborne group over the smoking crater.

Hex-Duo 6:  He’s all yours boys.

All of the robots have now joined above the crater and are smiling at the chance to kill the Commander themselves.

Commander:  (Hovering in a fighter stance, completely unwavering).  So, you’re all too cowardly to fight one-on-one?  Seems you take after your leader nicely.

Derek:  (Still with his entire world spinning).  I’ll…I’ll…(Fires a blast that goes nowhere and does nothing).  WHERE ARE YOU?!

Kevin:  (Runs up to Derek, yet keeps a slight distance).  Derek, we need to get out of here right now!

Derek:  No!  I’m not leaving until I show them who’s in charge of this situation!

Kevin:  I hate to tell you, but they’re the ones in charge right now.

Derek takes another step and teeters over, grabbing his head and trying to make the world stop spinning.

-Kevin rushes in and slings Derek’s arm over his shoulder, leading him away with the others.

Jack:  Lindsey, leave now and take the others.

Lindsey:  (Smacks him).  Don’t you dare say that you’re staying!  (Gushing with tears).  I’m not letting you go, too!

Jack:  Go, now!

Commander:  Jack!  Get everyone the hell away from here!  If you all die then this will all be for nothing!

Hex-Duo 6:  Charming, they think they can justify their deaths in some way.

-The Commander turns around to dodge out of the way from 4’s attack, sidestepping it and cracking the robot in the head with an elbow.

-1 makes a rush, but the Commander performs a solid block, coming out of it to grab the machine’s arm and throwing it into 8 as it sneaks in from behind.

Commander:  Fighting me in a group?  You come into my city unwelcome and you attack us like a group of cowards?  I assume that none of you were programmed with shame.

Hex-Duo 4:  We don’t need it when we’re having this much fun.

4 slams the Commander in the back, 9 from the front, and 3 and 1 from the sides alternatively.

-They are about to strike again but the Commander throws them back with a quick increase of power, then blasts them all one by one with all the energy he can find.

-Sadly, once the smoke clears they’re all still standing undamaged and laughing.

Hex-Duo 6:  (Floats up in front of the Commander).  This is truly pathetic.  I expected more from the great and powerful cousin of Octavious.

Jack:  (Shocked to hear this).  Cousin…?

Commander:  (Cringes).  I want nothing to do with that man anymore.  He has no ties to me anymore.  I refuse to be considered a part of his family.

Hex-Duo 6:  That’s a shame because unfortunately he feels the same way.  He doesn’t really have anything good to say about you.

Commander:  I wouldn’t expect a coward such as him to have anything important to say.

Hex-Duo 6:  I keep finding it hard to respect anyone who insists on referring to everyone else as “cowards”, especially coming from a traitor such as you.

-This last comment obviously agitates the Commander, forcing him into a mad rush at Hex-Duo 6, punching and kicking furiously.

-Hex-Duo 6 just smiles and dodges every single strike, taking great amusement and pleasure in this whole exchange.

Commander:  I made my choice!  I’ve chosen to live a different life!

Hex-Duo 6:  And it’s sad that this is how you chose it to end.  If you had stayed with the Demon Regime I’m sure you would have gone far.  Oh well.

Pops the Commander in the face and then snaps its robotic fingers.

The rest of the Hex-Duo robots converge on the Commander, assaulting him ferociously.

Lindsey:  (Having taken Jack’s advice, she’s begun running off with the others.  She’s totally lost it).  I couldn’t do anything…

A single stray soldier runs up to Lindsey and helps move her along with the group.  He’s covered in full uniform and a cap pulled down low.

Solider:  Please, let me come along with you all.

Lindsey looks up and nods, doing her best to maintain.

Danny:  (Squints to see his face).  Chris…?

Soldier:  (Shakes his head).  No, I’m sorry.

Derek:  (Finally clears his head and looks back at what’s going on, seeing it clearly for the first time since he’s been hit.  He can hardly form words to express what he’s feeling).  God dammit…

Jack:  Commander!

Commander:  (Looking down at Jack.  He’s been beaten senseless).  Jack!  I told you to get out of here!  Go now!

Jack:  Not without…(He chokes back this last part as he knows what’s coming).

Commander:  (A look of supreme sorrow has washed over his face.  He knows this is it).  Jack…I’m sorry for everything.  Forgive me.

Hex-Duo 6 comes up behind him, places a hand on his back, and blasts a gory hole through the center of the Commander.

-Jack yells something that no one can really hear as the Commander’s eyes roll back and go white, blood spewing from the gaping hole in his chest.

-Derek comes up behind Jack and pulls him along, realizing that all they can do is flee.

-As the Hex-Duo robots look for the teenagers about to get away, the Commander finds his last bit of strength and fires a massive blast downward, creating a towering wall of flames between the group of robots and the refugees making their escape.

Hex-Duo 6:  Enough from you.

Reaches out and breaks the Commander’s neck.

-Hex-Duo 6 looks out at the kids one last time before they leave its sight.

Hex-Duo 6:  Let them go.  7’s with them.  We aren’t in any rush to finish them off anyway.  We’ll give them a day’s head start.  Tomorrow we begin the hunt.

The Hex-Duo robots all grin menacingly at this announcement.

-The scene fades away to dark with the last image being the 9 robots and a backdrop of fire, the Commander’s dead body hanging from 6’s grasp.

To Be Continued…
